06.30.08 - 1 year Appointment
Jackson
had his one year check-up today. It went decently. He is up to 19 pounds, 7
ounces and is 29.5 inches tall. He's at the 8th percentile for weight and about
in the middle at the 44th percentile for height, so he's still a teeny little
thing. We talked about his diet and the doctor said it sounds like he is getting
everything he needs, but is probably just burning off the calories by being so
active. She recommended we include more high-caloric foods like dairy, so we'll
probably add an additional serving of milk or yogurt since he is still refusing
to eat cheese. I think we surprised her in a good way by saying we still have
him rear-facing in the car, he's never had juice, he doesn't watch TV, and he
doesn't use a pacifier. Yes, I'm already a strict, over-protective mother and
I'm proud of it! Jackson screamed for pretty much the whole exam. She said he's
at an age where he will remember the doctor's office and hate it every time.
Lovely. His ears were a little red from teething (tooth #7 popped through just
yesterday), but everything checked out okay. He got the two dreaded shots and
clung onto me for dear life during the process. I think he was proud of his Bugs
Bunny band-aid afterwards though. He's been fine since then, but we'll pump him
with Tylenol every four hours just to be on the safe side. It's the end of a
busy last three days for us, so I'm happy to have a day off tomorrow to just
stay home. We went to Heather's baby shower luau on Saturday. Jackson did pretty
well. We stayed indoors mostly because of the heat. He loved watching the
dachshunds run around and bark. On Sunday, we had our annual church picnic. Last
year when he went, he was only two weeks old. He's definitely grown since then!
He had a blast running up and down the sidewalk. Daddy let him fall face first
into the mud though, and that did not thrill him. We headed over to my parents'
house afterwards so Jackson could try out the new pool we got for him. He wasn't
so sure about it first, but once he figured out he could splash around and play,
he had a blast.
06.20.08 - picky, picky
We
have been so busy since Jackson's birthday! We've done a lot of playgroups
lately, even hosting one here this morning. Jackson does not appreciate being
chased around by all the girls, haha. He is still being a very picky eater, but
we're getting there. Breakfast is great - usually oatmeal, yogurt, or a whole
wheat blueberry waffle (his new favorite food). It's the lunch and dinner
options that make him cry and spit everything out. Sometimes he'll eat a "turkey
sandwich", which is just bits of bread with a little piece of turkey rolled up
inside. I can't get him to eat meat or cheese by itself. Only with bread or
crackers. He will not eat any fruits or veggies at this point, except for the
freeze-dried snack kinds. He seems to like the Lil' Sides from Gerber okay for
dinner, but we are still relying on the jarred baby food for the days when it
seems he just is not eating enough. He is completely done with formula as of the
other night. He LOVES his whole milk and does 2-3 cups/bottles a day of that. We
need to go get him some more cups and then the bottle will be forgotten about
too. I'm amazed at how great he transitioned from the formula to the milk - it
was a piece of cake! He is only saying about 5 words right now (dada, mama, hi,
nighty-night (ny-ny), and uh-oh), but his comprehension is outstanding. He
really understands pretty much anything we tell him or ask him. He knows all of
his toys by name, especially his ball, nappy dog, blocks, maracas, cars...he can
even distinguish shapes (circle, star, triangle are the three he is good at). I
think his next word will probably be either ball or car. He tries, but they both
still come out as "daaaaa". Oh, and the most amazing thing of all: he can sing!
Well, hum anyways. He can hum along to the Elmo's World song. Whenever he sees
his Elmo doll or a diaper (because they have Elmo on them), he'll start humming
and he seriously is on key. It's pretty surreal. My little Josh Groban in the
making :).
06.10.08 - Happy Birthday!
Today
is Jackson's first birthday! We had his party this past Sunday with mostly
family a few good friends. Jackson was a tad cranky from going practically
napless (he had one short nap in the car), but all things considering, he did
really well with the whole party experience. He got lots of great presents and
had the most delicious monkey cake. It was fun watching him dig into his own
little cake. I somehow came down with a cold over the weekend and have since
passed it on to Jackson a little bit. He was pretty miserable yesterday. He
seemed to feel a whole lot better today though, which was nice since it was his
birthday! He had some of his playgroup friends over for some chocolate chip cake
and playtime this morning. His auntie Heather came over in the afternoon to
bring him a gift of monkey pajamas since she couldn't make it to the party on
Sunday, so he had fun playing with her and watching his birthday thunderstorm,
complete with hail.
06.04.08 - Ouch!
Jackson
got a pretty good ouchie today. I was sitting at the computer and he was about
three feet away from me. If you've seen our camera, you know how big and heavy
it is, especially with the extended flash on it. Well, it was sitting on our
dresser and the strap was hanging down. That's a fluke in itself because we're
so careful to always keep the strap out of reach so he can't grab it. The strap
was hanging down though and he grabbed it and the camera came falling down and
hit him directly in the face. I saw it happen, but couldn't grab it fast enough.
Oh man, I felt so bad. He was crying so hard! He ended up with a nice bruise and
small bump above his eyebrow and a scratch/red mark down the side of his nose.
That's pretty good considering how big and heavy that camera is! I still feel
terrible though. I hope it heals by the weekend so he doesn't look all banged up
for his party...and his portraits that we were planning to do on Saturday.
